WORTHY GOALS

Professional sports are back!  Admit it, some of you are thrilled to be spending a little time with the A/C this week, aren’t you?!

In a strange-but-true COVID story, tomorrow is the start of the playoff season.  The Stanley Cup is the holy grail of hockey.  The athletes we see today, began their long journey a couple of decades ago.

Timbits hockey has to be the most hilarious thing to watch!  Many, many kids will strap on skates and head out to a rink to pursue their dreams.  Over the years, some will continue to grow, learn and improve in their hockey world, and some will find other adventures and hobbies.  Very, very few will ever touch the Stanley Cup.

Does that make all the other “goals” (pun intended) before the Stanley Cup useless?  Of course not!  Friendships, teamwork, physical fitness and other life lessons can all come through the pursuit of hockey to the best of each individual’s ability.

Unlike hockey, the “Holy Grail” of Financial Freedom is not one static physical thing.  Our financial life goals look different to each adult and family.  To be clear, “freedom” is literally a different number to almost everyone.  While one person wants monthly cashflow of $5,000, their neighbor may see financial freedom as $30,000 of income flowing in every month—from all of their investments.  And the visions of freedom diverge even further after that:  travel, family, legacy, and lifestyle choices are unique to each of us.

But hockey and finances have some similarities too.

We believe that any progress towards your personal definition of Financial Freedom is a worthy “goal.”  We have been chastised lately for continuing to post about financial freedom during these difficult economic times.  But really, if we posted about “investing in anything to be financially responsible”—who would ever click on that headline?!?

The dream and vision of the Holy Grail is what gets us excited and moving forward.  The goals might simply begin at reducing debt, or finding a new job—but each precious goal to a Timbit player is absolutely a victory (ask any 5 year old!).

And I think we all know that the pursuit of the Holy Grail is a path filled with obstacles and setbacks.  Professional hockey players have played hundreds of games in their hockey careers.  They win some, and lose some, and get clobbered in some games.  But they don’t give up.  They keep pursuing their Stanley Cup vision.

As some of us return to cheering for our favourite players or teams, think of all the worthy goals it took those athletes to get here.  They have sacrificed, trained hard and persevered through many challenges.  Now, “flip the script” to yourself:  What is your vision of Financial Freedom?  What goals can you continue to pursue, even in a COVID crazy world?  Every little bit of progress matters:  to your financial future, and your family’s.
