DID YOU TAKE THE SHOT?
My son has been playing soccer since he could waddle. So I have “cheered” at a lot of soccer games over the years. Snow, rain, blazing heat, ridiculous wind—we’ve seen Mother Nature throw her best at these young lads. Throughout it all, a really funny trend continues to this day: some kids just won’t take the shot! They’ll dazzle the opponent with their speed, they’ll deek around 5 guys to get really close to the net, they’ll pass to and from other skilled players with ease—but then … it’s like they forget the ultimate goal of the game.
They miss one opportunity after another, not because of lack of skill or stamina or passion for the sport. They simply don’t take the shot that might end up in the net and score a goal. If you have kids, you know they have a plethora of excuses—some funnier than others. And some are even real! But at the core, they just didn’t take the shot.
Now for the brutal truth: sometimes we’re not much different than our kids. We are a bit taller, sometimes a bit wiser, and we often have bigger toys. I don’t know about your house, but at my house we are always learning from our kids and this past weekend was no exception. Why? Because one of the soccer keepers was exceptionally short. When players did take a shot, it was easy to score. But as Wayne Gretzky reminds us, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” How many times as an adult have you missed an opportunity simply because you didn’t take a shot?
In soccer you “win” by scoring goals; with your financial freedom, you “win” by creating opportunities to grow your wealth and/or income. I find Calgary’s economy is a bit like that vertically-challenged goal keeper: it’s quite easy to score a goal in Calgary real estate these days! With a little homework, a good strategy and some elbow grease, great deals are happening every day. Will you wait for all the stars to align before you’re sure? Or five years from now will you be thrilled that you just “took the shot.”
