WHEN YOU CAN’T JUST “GOOGLE THAT”
I can hear my kids cringing already: “aw come on, you can google everything!” Yes, and no. And then they’ll say, “well then it’s for sure on Youtube.” Yes and no.
Yes, you’ll find something about almost any topic. And it may—or may not—be accurate. Then, you’ll need to follow the information with action.
Here’s how it sometimes goes:
- Find Youtube video about “how to do home project X”
- Find supplies at 3 different stores
- Begin
- Need another tool for the next part, back to the store
- Ran out of supplies for this part, back to the store
- Just realized we need a permit
- City/town says we need proper drawings, who does that?
- City/town says we failed inspection for any number of fine-print reasons
- Etc ….
Now, before some of you DIY experts get upset, let us explain. Yes, there are lots of repair and renovation projects that can be done by Joe Average real estate investor. And yes, they can even be done well.
But now, let me ask you this: are you sure that was the best use of your time and energy (and sometimes frustration)? Undoubtedly some of you will answer a defiant yes to all things tools-related. But now, let me ask you this: what about the bookkeeping? Or the property management?
We are truly privileged to be able to learn and work with some amazing colleagues and mentors. We are constantly learning about best practices in Real Estate Investing. And one thing we know for certain is that the best Investors, with the longest time “in the game” ALL work with a team.
So what do we do? Mimic our mentors of course! We do what we’re best at, and then we hire and consult with all of our other team members. Even within our marriage, we divide and conquer with some business and family tasks. That is neither good nor bad, but it does allow us to each use our strengths and use our time wisely. For example, a lot of people ask Greg how he comes up with all these ideas for Financial Freedom Friday$: simple! His wife does it!!
This summer you will likely have some time to step back, contemplate and even plan for future real estate investments. We invite you to take a good long look at the best use of your time and energy—whether you can “just google that” or not.
