RIDING OFF INTO THE SUNSET …
Many people have a romantic notion of their retirement. If you live in Alberta, western analogies are often used—especially as Calgary prepares to host the Stampede again this year.
However, every good story has its ups and downs, its crises and highlights. Every life has bumps, sidetracks and mishaps. I’m just saying, sometimes each of us gets thrown off a horse a time or two. Medical conditions, divorces, even the death of a loved one, can dramatically alter your path to your sunset. Some people have seen Covid throw a giant detour into their journey.
The key is to get back on the horse. Or switch to a bike! Or sail off into the sunset instead!
If Plan A didn’t work out, or is too stressful, or isn’t generating enough growth of your wealth—well then, time for Plan B (or C, or Q, we’re not picky).
Seriously though, these days we hear a lot of stories from investors who tried X, but that didn’t work out. Or they tried Y, but it was too hard. Or they tried Z, and 15 banks said no.
And these days we are living the challenge. Each week another product is delayed or out of stock, another wait list for items or service grew by 2 weeks, and another price increase was added to some critical component of our business.
Did you hear that? The horse is trying to buck us off too! But our “sunset,” our retirement, and the rest of our WHY keeps us going. We continue to solve problems and move forward. We’re not afraid of putting in the hard work—especially so our partners don’t have to.
Some of our partners have reached mid-life and aren’t where they thought they’d be: job loss, partner loss, business losses …. They have grieved and stormed their way through the initial shocks, then created a plan to grow wealthier and healthier with a real estate investing partner. They are creating their comeback story (often the best part of any movie!) property by property.
Riding a horse and investing in real estate have a lot in common. Mastery comes with practice—unless you hire a good jockey. You can learn a lot in your twenties when there are no kids but tons of confidence and a higher risk tolerance. By mid-life, many people prefer a little less risk. Partnering with more experienced investors can dramatically decrease your risks. Especially if you’re exploring new markets!
